Tuscaloosa Students Send Boats North

Updated: Mar 20, 2023

Jaclyn Foster, polar educator, 2021 Alabama History Teacher of Year, and Grosvenor Teacher Fellow with National Geographic Education and Lindblad Expeditions integrated the Float Your Boat project into her middle school classroom at Tuscaloosa Academy in Alabama. See all her projects here.

Last summer, in 2022 Mrs. Foster spent a few weeks on an expedition to the high arctic of Svalbard and the Arctic Ocean with National Geographic and Lindblad Expedition as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. Then, during this school year she has spent the whole school year teaching about the Arctic and her experience there to bring awareness and educate her students and the local community.

Float Your Boat was a valuable addition to her curriculum and became a part of the large classroom project Mrs. Foster has been doing for National Geographic Education about the Arctic. Her students' decorated wooden boats will be deployed alongside a parent Arctic buoy with the International Arctic Buoy Programme during the first week of April 2023 on the sea ice off the coast of Utqiaġvik, Alaska.
